Homemade Heart Brownies

Homemade Heart Brownies | Tulips & RainIn the spirit of the season I wanted to make something heart shaped with bright pink frosting. So I scooted over to Target and got myself a set of heart shaped cookies cutters and did some research to find out that Wilton Rose Icing Color was the secret to this delightfully pink hue.

Homemade Heart Brownies | Tulips & RainThese brownies are a tried and true favorite! The recipe card reads “Blue Ribbon Brownies.” My mom won a county fair contest with them when she was a kid. And in high school I made them cooking-show-style for my speech class. If you need a simple, homemade brownie recipe this is the way to go!

Homemade Heart Brownies | Tulips & RainIngredients:
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
3/4 cup cocoa
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup flour
1/4 tsp flour
1/4 tsp baking powder

Directions:
Cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla, then cocoa. Add flour, salt and baking powder. Spread in a 9×13 pan, batter will be thick. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Let cool completely. (I’m wildly impatient and skipped this step, but I would imagine that it would be much easier and neater if they were cool) Cut out heart shapes with cookies cutters.

The frosting is a basic vanilla frosting, I don’t really use a recipe. It usually goes: throw in a stick of butter and a tish of milk. Dump in a bunch of powdered sugar–eh too thick, a little more milk. Oh! I should put vanilla in this! And done 🙂 If you don’t trust yourself with that method, go with Martha’s Easy White Icing and of course, don’t forget the food coloring. Then go to town with the sprinkles!

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide for Single Girls

Valentine's Day Gift Guide for the Single Girl | Tulips & Rain When you’re single on Valentine’s Day you have several options. 1. Ignore the holiday all together. 2. Snuggle up on the couch with  Ben & Jerry and watch Titanic. 3. Go out and meet all the single men at the bars (the taken ones are stuck at enjoying romantic dinners). I’ve partaken in all of the above activities and you really can’t go wrong. This year it’ll be #3 in Kansas City with one of my best and oldest friends. And to celebrate the season of love you’re going to need to buy yourself a gift, because when you’re single you get to be guilelessly selfish. 🙂
